About the artist:

Serene Hodgman is of Samoan (Safotu and Faleasiu), Rotuman, Tongan and Irish decent and is based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

After studying at The University of Hawai’i and The University of Auckland she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) degree from Elam School of Fine arts as well as a Masters in Teaching and Learning (Primary).

Inspired by her upbringing in Tāmaki, Serene’s practice integrates traditional handmade crafts such as tivaevae (Cook Island embroidery), ‘ie toga (Samoan fine mats) and more recently kapa kuiki (Hawaiian quilting).

Her works are included in The University of Auckland Art Collection, the Auckland War Memorial Museum and private collections.
