From a series of textile works from Vakamuduo - gratitude overflowing to the clouds exhibition shown in Kū Kāhiko, 2026.

Vakamuduo is a Fijian word for gratitude describing a scale that extends to the clouds. This scale of gratitude is one I attribute to Tāmaki Makaurau, and specifically Manukau / South Auckland, as I prepare to close a 25 year chapter and migrate south, drawn by whānau, salt water and a gentler pace. Dumudumukuro (jellyfish) interest me as creatures without hearts or brains but instead have a decentralised nervous system capable of complex behaviors, coordinated swimming and even associative learning.

Jellyfish are described in Encyclopaedia Britannica as otherworldly, like
glowing apparitions. To me, they are a reminder of nervous system regulation, and when regulated, anything is possible.

This is my third attempt at leaving Auckland; it’s not easy to detach from a habitat that has shaped me. This suite of new textile works pays homage to the layers of memories and growth that this city has etched into my heart. Taking the form of banners, the works are both affirmations and
dreaming, like spells sewn into stitches, commitment captured in layers, trims, fringe and ric-rac – a love letter to an extra-ordinary chapter.

My gratitude is overflowing.
