Claudia Jowitt an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, is the maker behind Kailoma Club. Her paternal line comes from Savusavu a coastal area on the island of Vanua Levu in Fiji, which has numerous Kailoma clans due to its trade history in shipbuilding & copra harvesting. In Fijian the term 'kailoma' or 'fruit-salad' is used to describe people of mixed iTaukei & Kaivalagi or Pākeha heritage. When Claudia was younger she didn't like the term, but now has grown to appreciate it as an expression of the growing number of Fijians of the diaspora of mixed heritage with a shared history & whakapapa.
This jewellery draws on the memories of visiting her relatives pearl farm in Savusavu Bay & the exploring the colourful reefs along the coasts her vuvale is from.
