The Tivaevae Series
As an attempt to dig into my Cook Island roots I quickly found myself reminiscing about my college art education. During my first NCEA year of college I enrolled into a Maori and Pacific Painting class where we explored different techniques and mediums so I thought it was a good place to use what I had learned in the past and bring it to light. In this class we explored the art of Cook island Tivaevae quilt making. It was through this process that I decided to use it as a starting point and recreate it in a 3 piece series with pen and paper.
Aski is an emerging artist based in Wellington city. She has recently started to share her work on instagram and is slowly starting to expand her platforms into different stores and galleries around New Zealand. Aski is currently exploring art that reflects her Maori and Pacific heritage in the form of hand drawn patterns and motifs as a means to reconnect to her whakapapa and her pacific roots.
