Ipu Putiputi te Tae Muka - Tautahi

This is one of two Ipu putiputi (vases/urns) made with support from Te Toi Uki, The Crown Lynn & Clay works Museum and Te Pou Theatre a Kaupapa Māori performing arts venue. 
Te Pou Theatre production The Handlers opens Friday 17th May and runs till the 2nd June. A play about "Crown Lynn wahine, handling it all."

The Handlers by Poata Alvie McKree will make you laugh, cry, reminisce, get you all fired up and make you remember all the mana wāhine in your life, as well as your favourite Crown Lynn mug. While The Handlers is a fictionalised account of Māori women’s experiences working in factories like Crown Lynn in the 70s, the wāhine that carries these stories are familiar to all of us.

These vessels have been made in a celebration of these Wāhine and the era of 60/70s crown Lynn. They are inspired by the Crown Lynn urns of this time. There was a small amount of hand thrown urns made for Crown Lynn and these are a priced collectors item still today. We have designed a creamy matte glaze to emulate that glaze style of the Crown Lynns range of urns.

These will be displayed at Te Pou Theatre in Corbans Estate but will be shipped from the The Ceramics Studio.

This vessel is around 18.5cm tall and 22cm from handle to handle.

Hand thrown on the pottery wheel with hand moulded handles to nod to kōwhaiwhai.

About the artist

Esther McDonald (ngā puhi, ngāti wai, ngāti pukinga and pakeha) is a ceramic artist, who runs and owns Thea Ceramics. Esther specialises in wheel thrown pottery on small scale production, making pieces for every day use. Thea ceramics pieces are contemporary stoneware pieces,  inspired by where the sea meets the land. Esther works from her garden studio on Waiheke Island with the support of her small team. Pottery is in the family with her Nan Althea Kypers (which thea is named after) being a studio potter, teaching her uncle Shane Mcdoanld and then Shane teaching Esther when she was living in Melbourne Australia form 2009-2014. Thea ceramics works towards having well loved and functional ware that is a favourite in any home.
