These uku forms draw inspiration from kumete figure-supported bowls that emerged
during early tourism in the 1850s, particularly in the Rotorua region. At that time, a
growing non-Māori interest in whakairo led Māori artists to create dynamic and highly
decorative derivative forms, including lidded bowls supported by two opposing carved
figures. Reimagined through uku, these works honour that history while reflecting the
ongoing evolution of Māori art in a post-colonial context.
